Caritas, Love

Caritas means ‘love’ and ‘charity’ in Latin language.
Caritas also stands for ‘love to God and neighbors’ in Catholic Church.
Caritas implies all the humanitarian works and activities of the Catholic Church for the poor, oppressed and marginalized and signifies a network of Catholic organizations and institutions which provides humanitarian services.
Caritas Internationalis is a confederation of Catholic charitable organizations that are, in general, national Caritas agencies(Article 4.1); National charitable organizations whose statutes have been approved by the local Episcopal Conference or by its equivalent in law or, in the case of a country consisting of a single diocese, by the Diocesan Bishop or by his equivalent in law, are eligible for membership of Caritas Internationalis, following acceptance by the General Assembly and ratification by the Pontifical Council Cor Unum.(Article 4.2, Caritas Internationalis STATUTES)

Caritas is the Latin word for charity or love. The flaming heart on the Caritas circle emblem represents love and dedication to service. The Caritas logo is love is symbolic of Love for each of us and the love we are called to share with each other.

Caritas Internationalis

Caritas Korea has been a member of Caritas Internationalis, a worldwide network of Catholic relief and development organizations since 1979 and a member of the Caritas Asia, a regional Caritas association along with other 22 Catholic development agencies from Asia.
Caritas Internationalis is a public canonical juridical person dedicated to the service of the poor and to the promotion of charity and justice(Article 1.1, CI Statutes).
Caritas Internationalis is a confederation of 164 Catholic relief, development and social organizations working to build a better world, especially for the poor and oppressed, in over 200 countries and territories. Caritas works without regard to creed, race, or ethnicity, and is one of the world’s largest humanitarian networks. The registered office of General Secretariat is located in Vatican. Caritas Internationalis dispatches representatives to the United Nations in New York, Geneva, Rome, and Paris. Caritas provides a beacon of hope for tens of millions of women, men and children in times of hardship and contributes to the development of social justice in times of peace. Caritas’ mandate includes integral development, emergency relief, advocacy, peace building, respect for human rights and support for proper stewardship of the planet’s environment and resources. Caritas fights poverty, exclusion, intolerance and discrimination. More importantly, it empowers people to participate fully in all matters affecting their lives, and it advocates on their behalf at national and international forums.

Caritas Asia is a regional confederation with 22 Caritas national members in Asia. The goal of Caritas Asia is to coordinate member organizations’ humanitarian activities and to promote cooperation among member organizations in the Asia region. Caritas Asia is operating the Pan-Asia development programs and projects across the Asian region and working to empower capabilities of Caritas Asia member organizations. With the purpose of encouraging cooperation and solidarity of the region, Caritas Korea has supported two Pan-Asia programs, which are ‘Sustainable Agricultural Program’ and ‘Anti-Trafficking of Women and Children Program’ from the beginning of both programs.
